The BES 6001 Framework Standard is recognised across the industry as a means of demonstrating the highest levels of sustainability and responsibility. A rigorous independent third party assessment and certification against the requirements of BES 6001 was conducted to prove that an effective system for ensuring responsible sourcing exists within Tegral’s material sourcing operations.
Paddy Kelly, Tegral’s Managing Director says – “We were delighted back in 2014 to have become the first fibre cement slate manufacturer in Europe to have been awarded a “Very Good” rating. Our team have worked hard and have been dedicated to reaching this status of “Excellent” ever since. We are very focused on reducing our carbon footprint and sourcing our materials in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way in Tegral. So to achieve this today and be the first and only manufacturer with it, we are very proud.”
About BES 6001
The construction industry is a major consumer of resources. The BES 6001 standard was developed to enable construction product manufacturers prove that their products have been made with materials that have been responsibly sourced from suppliers who have documented health and safety systems, and quality and environment systems (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001).
Introduced by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 2009, BES 6001 is a holistic framework, bringing together many of the current management systems. In addition, it provides further areas of assessment, including traceability of our supply chain and our
interaction with local communities.
Our ongoing commitment to this standard, delivers many benefits for both our business and our customers. Annual audits provide third-party assessment and verification of our efforts to manage our environmental and social impacts. They also provide our products with a rating which enables architects and specifiers to achieve higher environmental levels on building
designs, built to the Code for Sustainable Homes, or BREEAM.
Tegral’s wood cellulose for fibre cement production is sourced from eco-certified plantations, timber used in its pallets are sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests, and, wherever possible, recyclable cardboard and plastics are used for banding, interleaves, bags and boxes.
Tegral uses local suppliers where possible. The primary raw material used comes from Irish Cement Ltd. Irish Cement Ltd. are also certified to the BES 6001 standard and have also achieved an “Excellent” rating. Tegral has demonstrated its strong commitment to recycling of materials. Tegral products are fully recyclable at the end of its service life which is a minimum of 60 years.
