Proud Finalists in 3 Green Awards

Tegral Building Products Ltd. has been at the forefront of sustainability within our industry for a very long time and have an on-going commitment in reducing the environmental and social impacts of our operations.

As part of this focus on sustainability and environmental impact, we were delighted to be shortlisted in the 2017 Green Awards.

Tegral were shortlisted in the following three categories: the Green Medium Size Organisation of the Year, the Sustainable Water Achievement Award and the Green Manufacturer of the Year Award. While we did not take home the final award on the night, we are proud to have been shortlisted and even more proud of our achievements in sustainability in our factory based in Athy, Co. Kildare.

Some of the key focal points noted in our submission which highlights our environmental achievements in recent years included the following:

•    A reduction in water use of 180,000m³ (This is equivalent to 73 Olympic size swimming pools)
•    New method for recycling of waste product into the manufacture of cement
•    100% recycling of process waste
•    25% energy consumption reduction
•    Reduction by 50% in water abstracted and discharged
•    Method developed for closed water circuit, 100% water recycling and zero water discharged

Water is a fundamentally important, natural and often scarce resource that needs to be conserved and consequently, we strive to reduce our water consumption every year. Our water treatment system treats and converts water from the production process into a purified form that is safe to be re-introduced to our local river.

With regard to the recycling of process waste, we had a committed objective to divert all of our fibre cement waster production material from landfill disposal to recycling and will achieve this to 100% level in 2017. This material is recycled for other uses such as a sub-base for road construction and for the manufacture of cement.

We also recognise that the ideal solution is not to produce waste at all, and we implement vigorous controls to ensure that our plant generates minimal amounts of waste during the production of our products.

Our manufacturing plant has in place, certified Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental management systems, to the internationally-recognised ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001standards. Tegral are also rated “Very Good” to the BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.
